We may be atypical customers as we purchased a commercial freezer for residential use. My wife is a professional chef and I am an avid gardener. We raise small livestock too. Freezers are critical infrastructure that help us preserve produce and meat until we are able to use it. We have been using several chest freezers for years, including the freezer my grandfather used to put up hogs back in the 1960s. The energy consumption was a chronic problem, as was the physical footprint. We shopped around a while before deciding to purchase an Orikool upright commercial freezer (54" two-door) to consolidate our freezers and help us stay organized as we build out a premium condiments product line and perfect the recipes for commercial production. The thick insulation and efficient compressor were driving factors in our purchase.
Customer service was excellent, with a real human reaching out via email to confirm shipping information. We were able to schedule delivery on a day that was most convenient to us. The company Orikool contracted for delivery was prompt, professional and worked with me to deliver the freezer on the parking pad, saving us time and effort. The freezer was well-packaged: it was bolted to a pallet and surrounded in a rigid paperboard that is like a very heavy duty cardboard. Additionally all the stainless surfaces were covered in a scratch-protection film. It took a little effort to determine the best way to unpack the freezer, but we managed to jack it up slightly and get the casters installed two at a time. Speaking of casters, these are robust and provided the ability to easily maneuver the empty unit into place. They also seem to be more than capable of supporting moving the unit with weight in it, although I am sure that is not recommended.
Overall we are very impressed with the freezer unit. It is so nice to be able to retrieve food without stooping down and without having to unbury the stuff that finds itself on the bottom of a chest freezer. The shelves are sturdy--none of that flimsy plastic stuff common in residential models. The verticality is a real space saver. There is quite a bit of ground clearance and the mechanical components are well-spaced, providing a lot of air and likely reducing the efficiency losses due to dust or excess heat.
The unit seemed louder than we had anticipated, despite marketing material boasting how quiet the compressor is, but we have few examples to compare to. This Orikool freezer (which also has interior fans for rapid cooling and even temperature distribution) is only 5-10db louder than our largest chest freezer when the fans and compressor are running simultaneously. After a few days we don't notice a qualitative difference in the noise level over the other appliances in use. We have not yet gathered enough quantitative data, but the unit cycle is fairly short and the interval between cycles is decently long. Compared to my vintage chest freezer which seems to be running its compressor 95% of the time, I am certain our Orikool freezer will provide measurable energy savings over time (although we are in California, so we may see more savings than someone in a cheaper energy market). In summary, the quality of life improvements of the extra space, the ease at which heavy items can be retrieved without strain and the general cleanliness of the commercial design make this freezer one of our best infrastructure investments in a long while.
